The Lion & the Mouse

The Lion & the MouseThe Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney, Little Brown & Company, 2009, 40 pp.

Awesome! This book adds a totally new dimension to Aesop's fable about the lion and the mouse. In this almost wordless picture book (an owl screeches, the lion roars, and the mouse squeaks), the captivating pictures draw the reader in. They beg interaction from the reader with the larger than life images of the lion and mouse set in the African Serengeti. My 3-year-old nephew was already roaring just looking at the cover. As you can see from the cover, the expression(s) on the lion's face is (are) priceless. The realistic pictures of the African plain and the animals create a "you are there feeling." Pinkney has created a magical world based on the beauty and majesty of the African plain. His detailing is incredible.  This absolutely stunning book well deserved 2010 Caldecott Medal.
