Meet the Puncs: A Remarkable Punctuation Family

Quincy Question Mark (Cooper, Barbara, Meet the Puncs.)Quincy Question Mark by Barbara Cooper, Gareth Stevens Publishing, 2004, hc, 32 pp.

If you like the Ruth Heller books about English grammar, A Catch of JewelsUp, Up and Away and others, you will enjoy the series, Meet the Puncs, A Remarkable Punctuation Family.

Each title is a punctuation mark personified. Quincy Question Mark is about a man named Quincy who is an airport security guard. Since he was a baby, he has asked lots of questions. Throughout the story, as we learn about Quincy, the question marks are written in bold, adding emphasis to the punctuation marks. As the story unfolds, all the uses of questions marks are shown. After the story is over, the last page is a recap, "Quincy's Checklist," of all the uses for question marks.

For example, use a question mark at the end of a sentence that asks a question or use a question mark with an exclamation point for "impact." The author also lists examples of questions: questions teachers' ask, doctors' ask or people who are arguing ask. The stories are clever and the kids are learning painlessly. This is a great way to reinforce grammar without your kids knowing it.

Other titles in this series:
Emma Exclamation Point,
Christopher Comma,
Peter Period,
Alan Apostrophe,
Hannah Hyphen-Hyphen.
