Beach Books: Picture Books

Before you head out the door to the beach, you might want to share these books.

A Beach Tail A Beach Tail by Karen Lynn Williams, illus. by Floyd Cooper, Boyds Mills Press, 2010, 32 pp. Ages: 4-8. A young boy, Gregory, and his dad are enjoying the beach, when Gregory is inspired to draw a lion in the sand. The lion's tail leads him farther and farther away from his dad as he explores the beach and beach life when he suddenly realizes that his dad is no longer behind him. He follows the lion's tail back to his dad where they are happily reunited. The illustrations are gorgeous.

The Boy on the Beach The Boy on the Beach by Niki Daly, Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 32 pp. Ages: 4-8. OP.A young boy is happy to go to the beach with his parents. But once he is there, he is afraid of the giant waves. He wanders off to find his own excitement, exploring an abandoned boat, when he suddenly feels lost and lonely. A "cool" lifeguard rescues him, taking him back to his parents. He finishes the day by sharing a giant ice cream cone with the lifeguard, Speedo, writing his name in the sand, and taking one more plunge into the giant ocean waves.

The Friend The Friend by Sarah Stewart, illus. by David Small, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2004, 48 pp. Ages: 4-8. A young girl is left with the family's housekeeper as her wealthy parents go off to do their thing. Through the week the young girl does her best to help with the daily chores and when they finish their chores they go down to the beach to relax. One day, the adventurous little girl goes down to the beach by herself and her ball drifts off to sea. Her housekeeper rescues her just in the nick of time.
